About Us

Newark Athletic Club was established in 1946 due to the enthusiasm of the local grammar school sports master, Mr F.N.C (Dickie) Dwyer. In the early days the club hosted Athletics matches on the grounds of Newark Cricket Club and in 1949 hosted the Nottinghamshire AAA Championships.

The club struggled to maintain members during the 1950s and a mere handful of athletes were responsible for keeping the club open until the mid-1960s which saw the arrival of new athletes (including our current Club President) to boost members and increase engagement.

From this point forward the club looked to increase opportunities for its athletes to compete in a variety of disciplines. For example, Newark Athletic Club was instrumental in the establishment of the Nottinghamshire Indoor Athletics League in 1981 – an event we are still involved in today!

In 2025 as we approach our 80^th Anniversary the club are represented in many different competitions at both regional and national level.  Our Track & Field athletes compete in the Northern League and many athletes compete as Masters in National competitions.  Our road runners compete in events such as the National Road Relays where we recently had our highest ever finish.  Our Cross Country runners compete in regional leagues and represent the club in National Championships.
