Despite half term there was a fantastic turn out of 27 young athletes for Newark AC for the second Nottinghamshire Sportshall event of the season. Quality of performance added to the quantity of competitors so that the club finished second this time, having come third at the first meeting.
Undoubted highlight of the day was the achievement of a new Sportshall record of 7.50m by under 11 Luke Willers in the Chest push event. This means that the Club now has 4 Sportshall record holders in total as Nicholas Lynch’s time for the 1 lap at under 11 still stands from 2005 as do Mike Beaumont’s under 15 marks in both the 2 lap and 4 lap from 1997/8. Even further in the past, the quartet is completed by J Preston who still holds the record for the under 11 vertical high jump set in 1987/8. It will be interesting to see if Luke’s record lasts that long!
Newark’s other winners on the day were under 11 Keating Walters who followed up her win in the standing triple jump last time with a leap of 1.82m in the standing long jump on this occasion; under 13 Henry Ellis who triumphed in 26.4 secs in the 2 lap sprint; under 13 Charlotte Peach who showed great stamina to produce a 60.7 secs win in the 4 lap race; Eloise McQuaid with 59cm in the vertical high jump; the under 11 girls relay team of Charlotte and Molly Ripley, Eden Sandy and Asia Moody (1.24.4 mins) along with their under 15 girl colleagues Eloise McQuaid, Eleanor Ripley, Bethany Scotney and Heather Barnes in the 4x2 lap relay (1.45.0 mins).
The under 15 girls won their category on the day while both the under 11 boys and under 11 girls were equal 1st in theirs. Of the remaining categories the Clubs’ under 15 boys were 3rd, the under 13 boys equal 3rd and the under 13 girls equal 4th.
Beginning with the under 11s, highlights for other athletes included a welcome return for Chris Ward who managed second in the 1 lap (14.0 secs) and a third place for Ben Lynch in the vertical high jump (37cm). Fine guest performances included Jack Satterley in the 1 lap (14.3 secs), Oliver Whaley in the same event (14.5 secs) and an excellent time of 1.30.0 mins for Luke Sanders and Lewis Hill in the 6 lap paarlauf. Georgia Sheldon will be very pleased with her 4.70m in the chest push as will Eleanor Miller with 4.10m in the same event. Ella Wilson managed an impressive standing long jump of 1.55m.
For the under 13s Edward Booth proved his stamina once more to grab 3rd in the 4 lap race in 59.0 secs while Tyler Ludlam and Thomas Hubbard will be proud of their great standing long jump efforts of 1.47m and 1.56m respectively.
Under 15s Peter Carrington and Chris Sanger both secured second places – Peter in the 2 lap (25.3 secs), vertical high jump (49cm) and standing long jump (2.16m) and Chris in the 4 lap (57.7 secs). Amy Scott proved she is on the way back from injury with fine guest performances in the shot (7.72m) and standing long jump (2.24m).
The next Sportshall is on December 20th.
